Updated Land Cruiser 70 Series by Black Box 4×4
The legendary Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series off-roader, despite its age, continues to be a symbol of reliability and capability, especially in markets outside North America. Following the recent manufacturer update, which made previous versions even more outdated, the masters from the Costa Rican workshop Blackbox Custom 4×4 presented their own version of modernization, borrowing ideas from an unexpected competitor.
The workshop presented two unique models: the all-wheel-drive station wagon LC76 and the pickup LC79. The most noticeable change in both vehicles was the replacement of standard halogen headlights with modern LED units taken from the new Land Rover Defender. These headlights fit perfectly into the original niches, avoiding any body modifications.
The semi-circular design of the LED optics unexpectedly harmoniously combines with the straight-lined front end of the Land Cruiser, creating a sharp contrast against the darkened headlight housings.
Preparation for the Most Challenging Routes
The updates were not limited to lighting. Both vehicles received comprehensive body and chassis preparation to improve off-road qualities.
The beige station wagon LC76 was equipped with an ARB bumper with an integrated winch, a bull bar, additional LED lighting, and a black radiator grille. The vehicle also received black wheel arch extensions, roof rails, and a snorkel. An even more important change was the updated suspension with Dobinsons springs and remote-reservoir shock absorbers, along with black wheels and 35-inch tires.
The white pickup LC79 received a similar update package, but its metal bumpers are painted body color. Its 16-inch black alloy wheels have a multi-spoke design and are covered with more aggressive off-road tires. The suspension here is slightly different: Old Man Emu BP-51 shock absorbers are installed at the front, while traditional leaf springs remain at the rear.
Technical Features of the Custom Models
The LC79 pickup is equipped with a 4.5-liter turbo-diesel V8 engine, producing 202 hp and 430 Nm of torque. Power is delivered to all four wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission and full-time four-wheel drive.
The engine of the LC76 station wagon is not officially named, but the absence of V8 badges and the year of manufacture point to a naturally aspirated 4.2-liter inline-six diesel engine. This unit develops 129 hp and 285 Nm of torque and is also paired with a manual gearbox.
Both presented vehicles are already sold, but the Blackbox workshop offers other modified Land Cruisers for purchase. Prices are not disclosed, but considering the level of modifications, they are significantly higher than the cost of the base versions.
Such projects from small but ambitious ateliers emphasize that iconic cars like the Land Cruiser 70 have incredible potential for a second life. They not only satisfy the needs of loyal fans of classic design but also integrate modern technologies, keeping them relevant even against the backdrop of new models. The demand for such unique vehicles indicates that the market values not only novelty but also character, reliability, and the possibility of creating an individual style offered by such reworked legends.
