One of the rarest Ferrari supercars will be one of the main lots of the August RM Sotheby’s auction in Monterey. Organizers expect that the 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO could sell for up to $11 million, which is approximately UAH 460 million. If the forecast comes true, the model will exceed the $10 million mark at public auction for the first time in history. RM Sotheby’s reports.
Ferrari 288 GTO aims for a new price record
The last year and a half have been record-breaking for collectible Ferrari supercars. In early 2026, a Ferrari F50 was sold at auction for $12.21 million (approximately UAH 511 million), and a Ferrari Enzo set a new record with a result of $17.88 million, or about UAH 748 million.
Now the attention of collectors is focused on the Ferrari 288 GTO – the model that started the modern line of the brand’s flagship supercars. The car was created as a homologation version for Group B racing, but after the championship was cancelled, it became Ferrari’s first limited-production series supercar.
The company produced only 272 examples of the 288 GTO, making it the rarest among all subsequent Ferrari flagships.
RM Sotheby’s auction will offer an example with only 1541 km (958 miles)
The car offered for auction has chassis number 54789 – it is the 99th example produced at the factory. Since its release, the supercar has traveled only 1541 km. According to estimates by the auction house, there may be no more than six Ferrari 288 GTOs with mileage under 1609 km left in the world.
The car was in a single private Ferrari collection for over 20 years and has a Ferrari Classiche Red Book certificate, confirming the originality of the engine and gearbox. From 2022 to 2024, the supercar underwent a full technical restoration at Ferrari of Central Florida after long-term storage.
The Ferrari 288 GTO was initially delivered to Germany in 1985. It later became part of the collection of Eckhard Blume, where it was kept alongside a Ferrari F40, F50, Enzo, and the Ferrari F300 race car driven by Michael Schumacher. It is the combination of minimal mileage, proven authenticity, and rarity that could make this car the first Ferrari 288 GTO to cross the $10 million threshold at a public auction.
