Suzuki Jimny in JDM version gets updated larger display

Updates without design changes

Seven years after the debut of the current generation in 2018, the Suzuki Jimny remains a favorite compact off-roader. While most manufacturers would have already introduced a new model or at least an update, the Japanese brand chose a more conservative path, focusing on improving safety and connectivity.

Differences between variants

The changes concern only the three-door version, as the five-door Jimny Nomade is a fresh addition to the Japanese model range. The exterior design remained untouched, which is quite justified – if desired, it can always be improved with factory or tuning accessories.

If the proportions in some photos seem a bit strange, it’s because you’re looking at the narrow-body version of the Jimny. This market-specific variant is designed according to kei car standards and does not have wheel arch extensions like the global model, known domestically as the Jimny Sierra. Another interesting feature is the additional mirrors installed under the side mirrors to reduce blind spots.

Cabin updates

In the cabin, the Jimny received two pleasant updates. The instrument panel now features a new 4.2-inch display between the analog gauges, which should satisfy Jimny enthusiasts who would be disappointed with a fully digital solution. An optional 9-inch multimedia system borrowed from the Swift can be added to it, providing modern connectivity. However, the base configuration retains a massive plastic cover at the top of the center console instead of a storage compartment or phone mount.

Safety improvements

More importantly, the three-door Jimny has finally caught up with the five-door model in terms of safety equipment. This was made possible by the “Dual Sensor Brake Support II” system, along with standard lane departure prevention functions, automatic high beams, road sign recognition, and new cybersecurity measures to comply with stricter regulations. Additionally, models with automatic transmission have standard adaptive cruise control and a false reverse start prevention function.

Technical specifications

Technically, everything remained unchanged. The regular Jimny is still equipped with a turbocharged three-cylinder engine with a displacement of 658 cc producing 63 hp, while the Jimny Sierra has a naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1.5 liters producing 103 hp. Both are paired with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission and use Suzuki’s all-wheel drive and a robust frame.

Availability and prices

The updated model is already available for order in Japan and will likely appear on some export markets in the future. Prices range from ¥1,918,400-2,160,400 ($12,800-14,400) for the Jimny and ¥2,271,500-2,385,900 ($15,200-15,900) for the Jimny Sierra, while the optional 9-inch display costs ¥128,700 ($860). Depending on the trim, prices are approximately $1,000-2,000 higher than before.

These upgrades demonstrate how Suzuki balances preserving the Jimny’s classic character with the need to meet modern safety and comfort requirements. Despite the lack of exterior changes, the interior updates make this iconic off-roader more suited for daily use without sacrificing its core advantages. The price increase reflects not only inflationary trends but also the additional equipment offered to buyers.
