Tata stuns competitors with a $13,000 SUV that resembles a compact Land Rover

Return of a Legend

Tata has introduced the updated Sierra, which has returned to the market after a 23-year hiatus. The new model, built on a completely new platform, combines concept car design, advanced technology, and an affordable price, making it a serious player in the Indian SUV market.

Design and Exterior

The production version is almost identical to the concept presented in 2023. The vehicle features cubic shapes and off-road proportions reminiscent of Land Rover models, which is not surprising given Tata’s ownership of Jaguar Land Rover.

The sturdy B-pillar and the wrap-around rear window are references to the original three-door Sierra, which was produced from 1991 to 2003. The new model combines these elements with glossy black trim, aluminum underbody protection, sculpted rear fenders, and a vertical rear end with full-size LED lights.

The base version of the Sierra received 17-inch steel wheels, while the top trim levels are equipped with 19-inch alloy wheels. Overall, the car’s design organically fits into modern trends, making it similar to the Freelander or even the compact Defender.

Dimensions and Competitors

The Sierra has a length of 4,340 mm, a width of 1,841 mm, a height of 1,715 mm, a wheelbase of 2,730 mm, and a ground clearance of 205 mm. Based on these parameters, it competes with models such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Honda Elevate, Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Skoda Kushaq, and Volkswagen Taigun.

Interior and Equipment

The car’s interior impresses with a trio of screens: a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch multimedia system, and a 12.3-inch display for the passenger. Optional equipment includes a 12-speaker JBL audio system with a soundbar on the dashboard, ambient lighting, dual-zone climate control, wireless charging, ventilated seats, and the largest panoramic sunroof in the segment.

The manufacturer promises a spacious and comfortable five-seater cabin with soft-touch materials and a luggage compartment volume of 622 liters. Safety is also a priority: the car has six airbags and an ADAS system with Level 2+ autonomous driving.

Platform and Powertrains

The SUV is built on the new ARGOS platform, which is compatible with various types of powertrains. At the start of sales, the Sierra will be available with a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter petrol engine producing 105 hp, a turbocharged 1.5-liter petrol engine producing 158 hp, and a 1.5-liter turbo-diesel engine producing 116 hp.

Depending on the trim level, buyers will be able to choose a six-speed manual transmission, a seven-speed robotic dual-clutch transmission, or a six-speed automatic transmission. The drive is front-wheel drive with modes for different types of terrain, but all-wheel-drive versions are expected in the future. An expansion of the powertrain lineup with electric, hybrid, and CNG versions is also planned.

Pricing Policy

The starting price of the Tata Sierra is 11.49 lakh rupees, which is approximately equivalent to $12,800 USD. This makes it slightly more expensive than its main competitor, the Hyundai Creta, which starts from 10.72 lakh rupees, but it remains an attractive offer on the market.

Orders for the new model will start being accepted from December 16, and the first deliveries to customers will begin on January 16. Despite its attractiveness, Tata does not plan to export the Sierra outside of India.

The return of the Tata Sierra demonstrates the growing competition in the segment of affordable SUVs, where Indian manufacturers are increasingly offering technological solutions previously available only in premium brands. The emphasis on safety and environmental friendliness is particularly noteworthy, making the model relevant in modern conditions. The success of the Sierra could influence Tata’s further strategy in the global market, even if for now the model is intended only for domestic consumption.
