Now you can buy a new Corvette on Amazon, but you’ll have to pay extra for nitrogen in the tires

Amazon Autos Expansion

The Amazon Autos service, which initially allowed customers to purchase Hyundai cars through the marketplace, has significantly expanded. The list of available brands now includes Chevrolet, Jeep, Kia, Mazda, and Subaru. This means buyers can order, for example, a new Corvette alongside household goods, creating an unusual shopping combination.

Geography and the Role of Dealers

The service has also increased its geographic presence and is now available in over 130 US cities, including Dallas, New York, and Los Angeles. It’s important to note that dealers remain an integral part of every transaction, as they are responsible for finalizing the paperwork and handing over the car to the buyer.

Benefits for the Buyer

The main advantage of buying a car through Amazon is the transparency of the process. Buyers can forget about long hours at the dealership and price negotiations, which are often inflated by add-on services like nitrogen-filled tires or extra trim packages. Instead, they get a clear, fixed price, the possibility of online financing, and a flexible schedule for picking up the car.

“I think it’s a truly innovative product,” said dealership owner Matthew Phillips.

Dealer Experience and Growth Challenges

Dealerships pay to list their cars on the platform, gaining access to a large online audience. However, experiences vary. Some dealers, like Matthew Phillips, who has sold only one car through Amazon, praise its innovativeness. Others, with more experience, note that as traffic has increased, certain difficulties have emerged.

“It used to be: click, click, click, and then the buyer would show up, sign four documents, and take the car,” said Alex Ruiz, sales manager at South Bay Hyundai, about the initial stage of Amazon Autos.

He also added that as the service’s popularity grew, technical and organizational problems began to arise, but he is confident that the system will stabilize over time.

The Future of Dealers and Regulations

Unlike manufacturers such as Tesla, Rivian, or Lucid, Amazon is not trying to eliminate dealers from the sales process. The platform acts more like a huge digital showroom. Due to regulatory restrictions that protect the traditional model of dealer sales of new cars, this symbiosis between the e-commerce giant and car dealerships seems likely to persist. For many dealers, this could become a new source of clients, even if the terms of cooperation are not always ideal and limit the ability to impose additional non-obvious markups.

The expansion of Amazon Autos reflects a general trend towards the digitalization of even such complex and regulated purchases as cars. Although the process is still far from perfect and faces scaling challenges, it offers consumers an unprecedented level of convenience and transparency. The success of this initiative may eventually force a review of traditional practices in the entire automotive retail sector, gradually reducing the role of intermediaries in the form we know them today. The dynamics of development will show whether the online platform becomes a primary sales channel or merely an additional tool for finding clients.
