Uber launches a feature for women passengers
The company Uber is introducing a new option for women passengers, which will allow them to choose women drivers. This feature will become available in Detroit, Los Angeles, and San Francisco as early as next month. The goal of the initiative is to increase the level of safety and comfort for women using the service.
Although the majority of Uber trips occur without incident, statistics show that cases of violence exist. According to company data, 61% of fatal incidents during trips are related to drivers. However, in almost half of the cases, the perpetrator was neither the driver nor the passenger.
How the new feature will work
Women passengers will be able to activate the “Women Drivers” option when booking a trip. If the waiting time is too long, the system will suggest another driver. The setting can also be configured in the app’s menu.
“While it’s not guaranteed, enabling this feature increases the chances of a ride with a woman driver,” Uber explains.
Women drivers will also be able to choose women passengers, especially in the evening. However, they will be able to turn this feature off to earn more. A similar system is already operating in 40 countries, starting with Saudi Arabia in 2019.
This initiative could be an important step in ensuring safety for women, who often face risks during trips.
