Tesla May Scale Back Ambitious Cybertruck Plans to Make It More Practical

Tesla May Introduce a Compact Pickup for the Global Market

Tesla is exploring the possibility of creating a compact pickup truck aimed at international markets. This decision is being discussed against the backdrop of weak Cybertruck sales and growing demand for utilitarian vehicles. Vice President of Engineering Lars Moravy confirmed that design teams are already working on concepts.

At a meeting with investors, Moravy noted:

“We have always discussed the idea of creating a smaller pickup truck.”

He explained that the current Cybertruck is too large for many markets, so a compact version could become a more versatile solution.

Prospects for the New Vehicle

A smaller pickup would not only expand Tesla’s presence in the segment but also meet needs that the current lineup does not cover. Moravy added:

“In the future, with the development of robotaxis, we are considering the possibility of using such vehicles not only for transporting people but also cargo.”

This may indicate the company’s plans to enter the medium-duty truck market or even minivans.

Currently, Tesla does not have a single model that would be ideally suited for delivery. Most of its service vehicles are small gasoline vans. A compact pickup could become a practical solution, especially for those looking for functionality, not just a “style car,” as the Cybertruck is often perceived.

Despite the initial hype around the Cybertruck, its sales are significantly lagging behind expectations. A smaller model could replicate the success of the Model Y, which found its buyer where the Model X failed. Tesla is clearly looking for new growth avenues, and a compact pickup could become one of them.
