Tesla Promised a $25,000 Electric Car, but Nissan Beat Them to It with the Base 2026 Leaf

2026 Nissan Leaf Pricing Update

Nissan has officially announced pricing for the new generation 2026 Leaf, making it one of the most affordable electric cars on the American market. The base Leaf S will cost $25,360, which is $4,630 less than the next S+ trim.

The Most Affordable Electric Car in the USA

Thanks to this price, the Leaf S will become the most budget-friendly electric car in the country, outpacing potential competitors such as the Chevrolet Bolt from GM or the hypothetical base Tesla model that Elon Musk has been promising since 2018 but has never released.

The new Leaf model is not only cheaper than previous versions but also offers improved specifications. For example, the base S trim is equipped with a 52 kWh battery and a 174 hp motor, while other versions have a 75 kWh battery and 215 hp.

Generation Price Comparison

Trim 2026 Year 2025 Year
LEAF S $25,360 $28,140
LEAF S+ $29,990
LEAF SV+ $34,230 $36,190
LEAF PLATINUM+ $38,990

The new SV+ version costs almost $2,000 less than the 2025 model, despite a greater range and additional standard features.

Technical Features

All versions, except the base S, are equipped with a 75 kWh battery, providing up to 303 miles of range. Furthermore, every Leaf for the American market has an NACS port for charging at Tesla stations, as well as a vehicle-to-load (V2L) function.

Updated Design and Interior

The Leaf’s redesign has given it a fastback-crossover form factor with a length of 173.4 inches and improved aerodynamics. LED lighting is now standard for all trims, and the top Platinum+ version has exclusive rear taillights inspired by the Nissan Z.

The interior has become more spacious thanks to a flat floor and updated seats. Base versions feature two 12.3-inch displays, while more expensive ones have 14.3-inch displays. The Platinum+ version also has a panoramic sunroof, a heads-up display, and a premium Bose audio system.

Release Timeline

Deliveries of the 2026 Leaf in the USA will begin in the fall of 2025, while the base S version will go on sale in the spring of 2026. The car is also planned for launch in Japan, Europe, and Australia.

Growing competition in the electric vehicle market is forcing manufacturers to find new ways to reduce prices without losing quality. Nissan has managed not only to maintain the Leaf’s affordability but also to significantly improve its technical characteristics, making it an attractive choice for those just starting their journey with electric cars. The implementation of technologies such as V2L and compatibility with the Tesla network adds to its practicality for everyday use.
