Tesla Hits Child Mannequin in Full Self-Driving Mode, But the Cause is Not the Technology

Tesla FSD Testing: Critical Safety Shortcomings

The Dawn Project organization, together with the Tesla Takedown movement, conducted a series of tests to demonstrate safety problems in the Full Self-Driving system. The video shows a Tesla with FSD driving past a stopped school bus with its signals on, failing to react to a child mannequin crossing the road.

The tests were conducted eight times, and in each case, the system did not stop before the mannequin. According to representatives of The Dawn Project, FSD did not even warn the driver about the collision.

“Software that ignores stopped school buses and hits children should be banned,” stated the organization’s founder, Dan O’Dowd.

Is This Really a Technology Problem?

It is important to note that FSD (Supervised) is not a fully autonomous system. Tesla emphasizes that the driver must remain attentive and be ready to intervene. In this case, had a human been monitoring the situation, the collision could have been avoided.

Separately, the Tesla Takedown movement is trying to influence the organizers of the Electrify Expo to refuse Tesla’s participation. They claim the company supports “policies of extreme views.” However, the likelihood that the organizers will take such a step remains low.

These events raise questions about the responsibility of drivers and manufacturers of autonomous systems. Even the smartest technologies require human control, especially in critical situations. So far, no system can fully replace the attention and reaction of a human behind the wheel.
