Citroen C4 X Test: French Yacht or Weekend Cruiser?

Each of us has acquaintances who love sedans and hate crossovers. Do you have? Look closely, they are definitely there. So under the influence of the public and not only, sooner or later they revise their taste and eventually think about some changes. And here they come up with the idea of buying not a hatchback, not a crossover, but something similar to a sedan, but ‘different’. This ‘different’ is called a crossover sedan… As the importer writes, ‘it is a unique combination of the elegance and dynamics of a fastback with the character and ground clearance of a crossover.’ And that’s exactly right. Because the Citroen C4 X combines the looks of a sedan, the features of a 4-door coupe, and the practicality of a crossover. Plus, it’s quite long (4.6 m). For comparison, the new Toyota Corolla is almost the same length. However, visually, the Citroen looks significantly longer, roughly like a Toyota Camry. As for the ground clearance, it is 156 mm. Despite the recent decline in popularity of diesel, it is still relevant in family cars designed for long trips and more. We got such a version – 1.5 BlueHDi 130 combined with the EAT8 gearbox. Although the interior of the C4 X repeats the design of its brethren, it is not only modern, but also functional. The controls are easy to use, and what pleased me personally, the climate control relies not on fiddling through a touchscreen, but on physical buttons, which are ergonomic and convenient. The seats are almost like office chairs – comfortable and soft, but have a weak side support. But the perfect driving position is easy to find, with a good range of steering and seat adjustments. The trunk is spacious (510 liters) and can easily accommodate a lot of necessary and unnecessary items, but its impractical opening complicates the transportation of bulky items. However, it is nice to know that the car is particularly well equipped. In this version, the C4 X offers more than necessary: a 10-inch touchscreen, blind spot monitoring, a head-up display, and more. The interior of the Citroen C4 X is a space where comfort combines with elegance. Heated and massage seats, high-quality materials, and a spacious trunk make every journey comfortable and pleasant. Driving on this car feels like sailing on a pleasure boat. The suspension is comfortable, even on uneven roads. Everything is quite simple: the C4 X literally floats above the road. Of course, it’s not a luxury sedan, but for a crossover sedan, it’s very comfortable! Only significant road irregularities can cause slight oscillation. Extremely well-damped, the C4 X ‘digests’ all road irregularities. But it’s not worth messing with sharp turns – the body roll is quite noticeable, but it’s a price for comfort. By the way, the sound insulation is good, wind noise is quite well suppressed. As for the steering, it’s not sporty, of course, but very pleasant. The only thing to consider is the length, in turns on narrow streets or when parking, you need to consider the dimensions. Among the main advantages – fuel efficiency. Despite its considerable size, the average fuel consumption figure was less than 5 l / 100 km during a week of operation (you can fit in 4!). At the same time, there is enough acceleration dynamics. Thanks to the 130-horsepower turbo-diesel and a torque of 300 Nm, overtaking does not require invoking God. Just press the gas and gain speed. And do not be frightened by the passport data (10+ seconds to 100 km / h), the practical feeling is completely different. Conclusion: for sedan enthusiasts who do not want to drive a crossover but strive to be trendy and at the same time need more freedom (curbs, bad roads, etc.), the C4 X is one of the very successful options, in particular as a practical, comfortable, and stylish family car.
