Test Opel Astra L: German Sausage with French Mustard

The new Opel Astra is still rarely seen on Ukrainian streets. But as soon as it appears, it usually attracts the attention of both passersby and drivers in the traffic flow. Of course, the well-known situation has influenced this, but this is all a matter of time, so let’s talk about the new Astra, which is based on the same platform as the Peugeot 308.

Externally, the new Astra truly stands out in the flow: a sharp “bone” in the middle of the hood and horizontal lines that carve out the contours of the wheel arches make this car stylish and modern.

In turn, the small ribbed black triangle behind the rear doors harks back to the Mk1 Astra and resembles the shapes of Formula 1 cars from previous years.

Simply put, the appearance of the new Opel Astra is definitely its strong side! An additional charm (in this case) is added by the color, which further emphasizes the geometric and design features of the model.

Despite sharing a platform with the Peugeot 308, the Astra L looks like a true German. This is neither good nor bad, it’s just a fact. Restrained and stylish.

Interior and Ergonomics

Inside, there is an improved version of the Mokka-style dashboard with a dual screen, many interesting textures in the cabin trim, and very comfortable seats (with very practical upholstery) approved by the German Institute of Orthopedics AGR. It should be noted – we’re talking about the front seats. In terms of comfort level, I would compare them to BMW! But you’ll have to get used to the seating position – sitting “like sitting on asphalt,” but everyone is different, of course.

As for the rear row, I cannot say that there is room to “swing” your legs (would like a bit more), but overall there is enough space.

But the trunk of the new Astra by C-class standards is quite decent: the hatchback has 422 liters.

Despite the dominance of screens and sensors, the Astra has a harmonious combination of digital and physical buttons. In fact, the central console is “two-tiered,” but not like the Peugeot 308 with the same “structure,” but in the Opel, reading information and using functions is, in my opinion, more convenient. Especially when you get used to where everything is.

In front of the driver now is the panoramic Pure Panel with two 10-inch screens (instrument and multimedia). The instrument screen has several display modes and can be supplemented with a color projection screen on the windshield. The multimedia screen is, of course, touchscreen, and below it is a narrow block of climate control buttons and a physical volume control knob. Fortunately, there are no touch buttons either on the steering wheel or on the central tunnel. To the dubious trends of modern interior fashion, I would include black glossy surfaces that quickly get dirty and easily scratch.

Driving Qualities

Regarding the suspension, it is phenomenally comfortable in the Opel Astra L and at the same time “tight.” If you drive over bumps or “sleeping policemen,” even in the rear row you won’t feel discomfort, but during active driving, the car does not “float” like jelly, but rather – holds the road almost like a hot hatch. Although given the engine and the passport dynamics, it is definitely not mulled wine.

In terms of driving qualities, it’s more like a semisweet Riesling. Nothing outstanding, but tasty, pleasant, and “quiet.” By “quiet,” I mean good sound insulation, both of the chassis and in general. Neither on uneven surfaces nor at a speed of 140+ are there extraneous noises; more than that – you feel like in a premium-class car.

As for the engine, its characteristics are not too impressive. 1.5 liters, 130 hp, and 12 seconds to a hundred. Too little? Talking about numbers – definitely. But in terms of feeling – quite enough, thanks to the turbodiesel’s traction and the 8-speed “automatic” from AISIN. And the most important thing is that the costs are just comical for such a car. 5 liters per hundred is more than a real indicator. If you set out to save – you can really manage in 4 liters, or even 3 and a half!

How Much Does It Cost

A new Opel Astra can be purchased in Ukraine for almost 1 million hryvnias. There are petrol and diesel of the same power – 130 hp. Diesel will cost slightly more, but in any case, you will receive a slew of helpers and systems that will help you feel confident and safe in different situations. Is it worth choosing Astra? In my opinion, it is definitely worth considering as an option, and it is very simple – if you are satisfied with the appearance and the interior, then you can buy and enjoy. Because in terms of driving characteristics, you will definitely have no complaints about the Astra!
