by Toyota’s Investment in the Czech Plant
Toyota is taking a significant step in Europe by investing substantial funds into its plant in the Czech Republic, which will soon begin producing the brand’s first battery-electric vehicle on the continent. Although the company has disclosed figures regarding the scale of the expansion and the volume of investments, details about the EV model itself remain unknown.
Investment and Expansion Details
The company is investing 680 million euros (equivalent to 792 million dollars at the current exchange rate) into its plant in Kolín, expanding its area from 152,000 to 173,000 square meters. This expansion will include not only a new production line for EVs but also new welding and painting shops. Out of the total investment amount, up to 64 million euros (74.5 million dollars) will be provided by the Czech government.
Current Capacities and Potential Models
Currently, the Czech plant produces the Yaris Hybrid and Aygo X and has an annual capacity of about 220,000 vehicles. Although it is possible that the future EV will be based on the same TNGA-B architecture as the Yaris, Toyota has previously indicated that now is not the best time to launch such a small EV, so the company is focused on the C, D, and E segments.
Government Support
The scale of the project has received approval from the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, Petr Fiala, who emphasized both the economic and strategic significance of the investments.

He also noted that the financing not only expands the production capacities of Kolín but also strengthens the country’s technological base, which is vitally important given that the automotive industry accounts for about 10% of the nation’s GDP.
Toyota’s First European Step
Whatever the future model may be, it will be a milestone for Toyota as the first battery-electric vehicle produced at a European facility. For the automaker, this is both a regional responsibility and a step towards balancing its global EV strategy with Europe’s accelerated transition away from internal combustion engines.
This initiative could contribute to the further growth of the electric vehicle market in Central Europe, where demand for eco-friendly vehicles is gradually increasing. The plant expansion could also create new jobs and stimulate the local economy, enhancing the region’s competitiveness in the field of clean technologies.
