Toyota Yaris Ativ Update
Toyota has introduced a hybrid powertrain and a sporty GR Sport trim for the Yaris Ativ model. The hybrid system delivers a combined 110 hp and promises fuel consumption at 69 miles per gallon. The Yaris Ativ HEV GR Sport version received aggressive body kit and handling improvements.
GR Sport Details
The Gazoo Racing trim includes a special body kit and a more expressive design. The redesigned front bumper features larger air intakes, along with deep side skirts, a rear diffuser, and a discrete black spoiler.
The exterior is complemented by 17-inch alloy wheels and black accents on the roof and mirrors, along with GR badges at the front and rear. Three colors are available: Platinum White Pearl, Red Mica Metallic, or Attitude Black Mica.
Interior and Equipment
Inside, the GR Sport continues the theme with black synthetic leather, gray stitching, and GR logos on the steering wheel and headrests. The trim is rich for its segment: a Pioneer six-speaker audio system, a 10.1-inch infotainment screen, wireless charging, automatic climate control, ambient lighting, and the Toyota Safety Sense safety package.
Hybrid Powertrain
As with most GR Sport models, the emphasis is on handling, not power. The suspension and steering have been specifically tuned for this version, and anti-roll bars have been added to improve balance in corners.
Another important news is the addition of a hybrid powertrain, which is borrowed from the Yaris and Yaris Cross, which share the TNGA-B platform.
The system combines a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 90 hp with an 79 hp electric motor. Together, the setup delivers 110 hp to the front wheels via an e-CVT, supported by a 0.7 kWh lithium-ion battery.
Drivers can choose between Eco, Normal, or Power modes. Fuel economy is a key advantage: Toyota claims consumption of 29.4 km/l, which is equivalent to 3.4 l/100 km or 69 miles per gallon. The hybrid is available not only in the GR Sport version but also in the Premium, which replaces the sporty body kit with 16-inch wheels and a more restrained black and gray interior.
For those who prefer simplicity, Toyota continues to offer a 1.2-liter petrol engine producing 93 hp, exclusively with a CVT. This non-hybrid version is available in four trims, including Premium Luxury, Premium, Smart, and Sport, but the GR Sport remains exclusively hybrid.
Pricing Policy
In Thailand, the Yaris Ativ HEV is the most affordable hybrid in Toyota’s lineup, starting from 719,000 baht ($22,200) for the Premium and 769,000 baht ($23,800) for the GR Sport. The hybrid is naturally more expensive than the base petrol version with the 1.2-liter engine, which starts at 549,000 baht ($17,000).
For body kit enthusiasts, the optional Charismo Drift package costs 19,990 baht ($620), and the GR accessory package is priced at 28,990 baht ($900).
Market Context
Japanese automakers are losing market share in Thailand to Chinese competitors: their share has fallen from 90% a few years ago to 71%. Toyota still leads with 38%, despite a recent decline, and aims to attract budget buyers with more affordable electrified options, such as the Yaris Ativ HEV.
Besides Thailand, where the Yaris Ativ is produced, the hybrid version will be exported to 23 markets, mostly in Southeast Asia.
These updates show how Toyota is adapting to market changes by offering eco-friendly and sporty solutions for subcompact sedans. Hybridization and a focus on design could help maintain competitiveness in a region where demand for affordable and economical cars continues to grow.
