Toyota Discontinued Production of Gasoline Corollas for the Japanese Market

The Japanese version of the Toyota Corolla has received minor updates for the new model year.

The manufacturer has discontinued the production of gasoline versions without a hybrid setup, so now only hybrid models remain in the lineup.

Certain trim levels have received additional standard equipment, which has led to a slight price increase.

Toyota continues to develop its hybrid strategy in the domestic market by updating one of its most popular models. The manufacturer has introduced changes for the Corolla in the new model year, with the main news being that now only hybrid versions will be sold in Japan.

The discontinuation of conventional gasoline Corollas is part of the company’s overall strategy to achieve carbon neutrality. Now only one powertrain is available to buyers – a hybrid system with a 1.8-liter engine. Toyota has already applied a similar approach in the US market, where it also stopped selling non-crossover versions. In Europe, however, the choice remains between a 1.8-liter and a more powerful 2.0-liter hybrid.

The 1.8-liter gasoline engine in the hybrid Corolla develops 97 hp (72 kW). In front-wheel-drive versions, it is paired with a single electric motor with a power of 94 hp (70 kW). All-wheel drive models (E-Four) receive an additional electric motor on the rear axle with a power of 40 hp (30 kW).

Updated Standard Equipment

The twelfth generation Corolla debuted in 2018 and received a minor facelift in 2022. However, Toyota continues to improve the compact car by adding new features to maintain competitiveness. This year, Japanese buyers have received more standard equipment in mid-range trims.

The innovations include front and rear cameras with a recording function, as well as a digital key. These options are now installed in all trims except the base one. Additional driver assistance systems have also appeared, such as a blind spot monitor, safe exit assist, and a parking braking system.

The G trim, available in sedan and wagon bodies, has received LED fog lights and new 16-inch alloy wheels. The base X version retains 15-inch steel wheels with plastic covers, an analog instrument panel, and lacks a multimedia screen. However, all models are now equipped with LED lighting at the front and rear.

Prices and Availability

The updated Corolla Sport hatchback will go on sale on May 9, and the sedan and wagon will start arriving at dealers on May 19.

The price starts from 2,279,200 yen (about $15,700) for the base hybrid X version and reaches 3,416,600 yen (approximately $23,500) for the top trim. The price of the entry-level model has increased by 139,400 yen ($960) compared to its predecessor, and the overall price increase depending on the trim ranges from 11,200 to 226,600 yen (from $80 to $1,600).

Toyota has not yet disclosed details about future updates, but the next generation Corolla is expected in 2026. The new model is likely to receive improved efficiency, an updated hybrid system, a more modern design, and more advanced technologies.
