Toyota May Introduce a Compact Pickup Based on the RAV4
Concepts from Independent Designers
Although Toyota has not officially announced a compact pickup yet, independent designers have already shown what it might look like. They used the RAV4 in the Adventure version with a more aggressive design as a basis. One concept features a traditional body-on-frame construction, while another proposes a unibody solution with RAV4 elements, but with a longer wheelbase and a cargo compartment.
“The idea of a unibody pickup may be more realistic. Such a model could compete with the Ford Maverick, offering sufficient practicality with smaller dimensions”
Possible Development Options
The company could go two ways: create a more urban variant on the TNGA-K platform (which is used for the RAV4) or develop a more off-road capable vehicle with a frame, similar to the Hilux. The first option would be oriented towards everyday use, while the second could become the successor to the legendary FJ Cruiser.
The TNGA-K platform supports various types of engines, including hybrid and plug-in hybrid systems. However, if Toyota decides to create a full-fledged off-roader, a body-on-frame construction will likely be chosen for better off-road capability and payload capacity.
The popularity of compact pickups in North America is growing, and if Toyota decides to enter this market, it could become a serious challenge for competitors. The choice between urban comfort and off-road capability remains a key question for potential buyers.
