Special Version of the Land Cruiser FJ60 for SEMA Show 2025
At the annual SEMA auto show in 2025, Toyota presented a unique concept called the Turbo Trail Cruiser, based on the classic FJ60 off-roader. This project combines retro 80s design with modern technologies that significantly enhance its performance.
Key Features of the Concept
Modern Powertrain
The heart of the Turbo Trail Cruiser is a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 engine borrowed from the modern Toyota Tundra. This unit, which is not a hybrid, produces 389 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque, which is almost double the figures of the original FJ60’s inline six-cylinder engine.
In addition to extra power, the engine swap provided a higher level of comfort, quietness, and efficiency, making the classic off-roader “more modern, suitable for daily use, and more capable than ever”.

Engineering Solutions and Modifications
Toyota Motorsports Garage engineers made an effort to preserve the factory quality of execution. They developed new components for installing the V6 engine into the old body without the need to cut the firewall or change the mounting points. Modifications include new engine mounts, a cooling radiator, an updated oil pan, special wiring, and an adapter for compatibility with the original five-speed gearbox. Additionally, a custom exhaust system was installed, giving the vehicle an aggressive sound.
Chassis Updates and Exterior Appearance
The off-roader retained its original frame but received a 1.5-inch lifted suspension and a modification of the front mounts. It is mounted on shiny beadlock wheels combined with powerful 35-inch tires. Despite the technical updates, the FJ60’s exterior remained virtually unchanged; even the halogen headlights were not replaced to preserve the classic style.
Interior and Audio System
In the interior, the only modern elements are the JBL audio system and the central touchscreen integrated into the retro dashboard.

Words from the Project Creator
Marty Schwerter, Director of Operations at Toyota Motorsports Garage, who led the project, noted:
“The Turbo Trail Cruiser demonstrates what happens when modern Toyota technologies are integrated into one of our most iconic classic cars. It’s a hot-rod-style approach, but with Toyota DNA – power, handling, and reliability in a package that still feels like a true Land Cruiser”.
Participation in SEMA Show 2025
The Turbo Trail Cruiser will be one of more than two dozen Toyota concepts presented at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Among other exhibits will be the Camry GT-S and the Corolla Cross Hybrid Nasu.
This project highlights the growing trend of updating classic cars with modern technologies, allowing for a combination of nostalgia with high performance. Similar initiatives could become the basis for special series or individual orders, as the demand for unique cars with history continues to grow.
