A unique car that appeared on screen in the movie “The Avengers” can now be purchased at auction. Acura is putting up for sale the specially created for the film NSX Roadster convertible.
A Chance for a Collector
Several years before the second-generation NSX car appeared on the roads, viewers saw its prototype in a movie. In “The Avengers,” Robert Downey Jr. arrived in a dark red Acura NSX Roadster concept convertible, and for car enthusiasts, it was an unforgettable appearance. Now this very car is being sold, giving one lucky buyer the chance to own a genuine piece of superhero movie history.
Acura confirmed that this unique roadster will be presented at the Sundance Festival in Park City, Utah. The car will appear during the annual charity event at the Grand Hyatt Deer Valley.
Auction Details and Charity
The sale will be conducted through the Cars & Bids auction platform, which has been chosen as the official platform for this offering. Acura states that the proceeds from the sale will be donated to a charity of the winning bidder’s choice. Furthermore, the company plans to make an additional contribution to the Sundance Institute, continuing its support for independent filmmakers and new creative voices.
Acura has been honored to stand alongside the Sundance Film Festival, supporting bold storytelling and the independent artists who bring it to life. In celebrating the legacy of Robert Redford, we are proud to highlight our commitment to the Sundance Institute through the auction of this iconic Acura NSX Roadster, ensuring continued support for new voices year-round.
Technical Features and Car History
Although the exterior of the NSX Roadster may suggest a close connection to the second-generation model, it is actually built on a first-generation 1991 NSX chassis that has already covered a significant 252,000 miles (405,555 km). It was rebuilt using manual labor: the resin and fiberglass body was reworked to match the concept seen on screen. The ground clearance was lowered by 2 inches, and 18-inch wheels were added to complete the transformation. Inside, except for a pair of custom seats, the interior remains largely faithful to the original NSX layout.
Other Acura Cars at the Festival
The NSX Roadster is not the only Acura that will be at Sundance. The MDX crossover has been named the official festival vehicle and will be used during various events and premieres. The compact Acura ADX will also be presented.
This auction becomes an interesting bridge between the worlds of cinema, the automotive industry, and charity. The sale of a car that was part of a global cinematic phenomenon not only provides a unique opportunity for a collector but also supports the future of independent cinema through funding for the Sundance Institute. It is a reminder of how a product of mass culture can get a second life and serve a social purpose, while preserving its history and cultural value for future generations of car enthusiasts and film buffs.
