Toyota Prepares New Electric Family Vehicles While Preserving Traditional Engines

Toyota Highlander and Sienna to Receive New Hybrid Versions for China

Toyota is preparing serious changes to its lineup for the Chinese market. The company has confirmed that the next generations of the Highlander and Sienna will receive a range extender (EREV) option. This decision is aimed at meeting the demand of Chinese buyers for more environmentally friendly family car options.

Information about the new models was presented during GAC Toyota Technology Day 2025. The company emphasized close cooperation with Chinese partners in the development of future models.

Updated Highlander

The current, fourth generation Highlander debuted in 2019. In China, the car is offered in hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions. The fifth generation will receive a completely new EREV version, specially adapted for the local market.

We cannot comment on future products for the USA

Representatives of Toyota North America declined to comment on the possibility of this technology appearing on the American market. However, given the growing demand for hybrids, such a development is quite possible.

Future of the Sienna

The fourth generation Sienna appeared in 2020 and uses the same platform as the Highlander. In China, the model is produced under the GAC Toyota brand, while FAW Toyota offers a similar version called the Granvia.

The fifth generation Sienna has already been confirmed for the Chinese market, while the version for North America is expected in 2027. As with the Highlander, the Chinese Sienna will receive a range extender system.

Technological Features

Toyota has not yet disclosed details of the new EREV system. It is expected to combine a small internal combustion engine, which will act as a generator, with a powerful battery and electric motors. This scheme will provide the benefits of an electric vehicle with an extended range.

In addition, the company confirmed the development of the sixth generation Toyota Hybrid System, which is expected to improve both efficiency and performance. The Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 safety system is also being updated with new sensors and a more powerful computing platform.

The presentation also mentioned the future generation of the Camry, although details remain unknown for now. The new model will likely inherit some features from Toyota concepts, both in design and technology.

Toyota’s decision to focus on hybrid technologies for the Chinese market reflects the global trend of reducing dependence on traditional internal combustion engines. A feature of the Chinese market remains strong government support for electric vehicles and strict environmental standards, which forces manufacturers to seek compromise solutions between familiar technologies and new requirements.
