Expectations for a Wider Model
The new generation Toyota Hilux has already been introduced, but the model range noticeably lacks a version with a wider track. This surprised those who expected to see a robust and stable configuration, characteristic of top trim levels. However, Toyota has not ruled out the possibility of its appearance.
Company representatives hinted that a wide-track version is under development, and the return of the GR Sport also remains on paper, although it will likely become available later.
Visualizing the Future
Digital artist Theophilus Chin created a series of GR Sport renders to show the potential appearance of the future model and fill the visual gap. It is worth noting that the latest Hilux generation is a more extensive modernization rather than a completely new development.
This means the central part of the pickup, including the doors and window profile, remained unchanged compared to the previous model.
Features of the Renders
In his visualizations, Theottle combines new front and rear lighting elements, a radiator grille, bumper air intakes, and fenders with the GR Sport silhouette. Minor changes in the cladding and underbody protection complement the overall picture.
A wider track and more massive wheels complete the image, and the result approaches what one might expect from an official factory version.
Previous GR Sport Versions
The previous Hilux model had various GR Sport options depending on the region. The newest and most powerful version appeared in 2023, receiving redesigned bumpers, widened wheel arches, a suspension with increased height and updated settings, as well as a slightly more powerful 2.8-liter turbo diesel engine producing 221 hp.
It did not aim to compete with the high-performance Ford Ranger Raptor, but found its niche among more work-oriented competitors like the Nissan Navara Warrior.
Current Track Situation
Currently, Toyota offers the new Hilux with only one track width for all trim levels. This is a deviation from the previous model range, which included a wider configuration in versions such as Rogue, Rugged X, and GR Sport.
Expert Opinions
During the model presentation in Australia, local media questioned the chief designer of Toyota Australia, Nick Hogios, who previously worked at Ford Australia on the development of cars like the Falcon XR6 and XR8, about a potential wide-body version.
Hogios responded to the question about a possible wide version: “That’s probably in the future. But yes, we will get there – for now, there are enough new features with this model.” He added: “From now on, it can only get better. So we are constantly improving our product.”
When asked about creating a new Hilux GR Sport, Sean Hanley, Vice President of Toyota Australia for Sales, Marketing, and Franchise Operations, stated:
“Not at this moment. But you never know what might happen. GR is an important part of our model range.”
Current Top Trim Level
Currently, the most equipped version in Australia is the Rugged X. This model retains the standard suspension and diesel engine but receives additional off-road equipment. It includes a steel front bumper with an integrated LED light panel and recovery points.
The list of additional accessories also includes a bull bar, a snorkel, roof rails, a hood protective overlay, and headlight protective covers.
Development Prospects
Although the official GR Sport version is currently postponed, Toyota has already begun hinting at performance-inspired accessories. During the launch of the new Hilux in Thailand, several modified examples were presented, including a model with GR Parts elements.
This indicates that Gazoo Racing has not been idle. Instead, they have likely already begun laying the groundwork for a more robust trim level, even if it is not yet ready to take center stage.
The expansion of the Hilux model range aligns with Toyota’s overall strategy of diversifying offerings to meet diverse customer needs. The emergence of a wide track and a potential GR Sport could significantly strengthen the brand’s position in the competitive battle with models like the Ford Ranger and Nissan Navara, especially in markets where both off-road capabilities and a sporty image are important.
