Toyota and Lexus are preparing to flood North America with new electric vehicles

Toyota and Lexus are preparing a large-scale expansion of their electric lineup

Toyota is actively developing its hybrid lineup but is simultaneously preparing for a large-scale entry into the electric vehicle market. By mid-2027, the company plans to introduce seven new electric models in the USA and Canada. Among them are an updated version of the bZ, the C-HR, a three-row SUV, as well as the electric Lexus RZ, ES, and another SUV.

Localization of production in the USA

Special attention is being paid to localization: two new electric SUVs (Toyota and Lexus) will be assembled at plants in Kentucky and Indiana starting in 2026. These models will compete with the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9. Toyota traditionally launches production only with guaranteed sales of 100-150 thousand units per year, so excess production is planned for export.

“We will gradually increase sales, but we are also considering the needs of Canada and the possibility of export,” noted Cooper Ericksen, Vice President of Toyota.

Strategy and prospects

Currently, the share of electric vehicles in the USA is only 8%, but Toyota expects it to double by 2030. The company is already opening a battery production plant in North Carolina, which will provide capacity for 300 thousand electric vehicles annually. Currently, 80% of Toyota and Lexus models in the USA have hybrid or electric versions, and by the end of the year, the brand plans to offer electrified options for the entire lineup.

Despite the slower-than-expected growth in the popularity of electric vehicles in the USA, Toyota is preparing for long-term competition. Export opportunities will allow the company to balance between markets where demand for EVs is growing faster. This approach could become key in the battle for leadership in the new era of the automotive industry.
