Toyota Revived the Scion Brand, Breaking All Established Norms

Unexpected Return of Scion

The Scion brand ceased to exist almost ten years ago, but Toyota unexpectedly revived this name at the SEMA show. However, this is not at all what you remember, since the name is now used for a rugged side-by-side off-roader.

Key Features of the Scion 01 Concept

Design and Functionality

Designed to provide the “best open-air adventure lifestyle experience,” the Scion 01 features a nearly vertical front end with a winch and a light bar. Also noticeable are massive off-road tires, black plastic cladding, and a digital camouflage body kit.

Additionally installed are auxiliary lights and a roll cage that meets FIA standards. These are complemented by a rear spare tire, four seats, and a roof.

Technical Specifications

According to the company, “proven” components of the drivetrain, suspension, and brakes were used, which were “strategically” selected for reliability in extreme conditions.

The company added that the 01 concept has “exceptional” suspension articulation and is capable of withstanding various complex off-road situations, including high-speed racing, challenging off-road routes, and technical rock crawling.

Hybrid Powertrain

Movement is provided by a turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid powertrain that produces over 300 hp. The manufacturer also noted the presence of a “Silent Mode,” allowing the 01 to operate solely on electricity.

Toyota Vice President of Vehicle Performance Development Don Federico said: “The Scion 01 concept is about taking what we do best at Toyota and combining it with the passions that drive us.” He added that the company is exploring how “Toyota’s performance can exist in completely new spaces – and inspire a new generation of enthusiasts to hit the road.”

Updates for the RAV4

The 01 concept joins a number of other developments, including the Camry GT-S and Turbo Trail Cruiser. Although we have already reviewed them before, Toyota mentioned the RAV4 GR Sport plug-in hybrid with a prototype body kit.

Toyota Brought Scion Back From The Dead And Broke Every Rule

Toyota had not published images at the time of writing, but the company reported that the crossover received new bumpers and streamlined side skirts. The updates are likely to make the model appear lower, and Toyota noted that this body kit demonstrates potential future stylistic improvements inspired by the dynamic aesthetics of Toyota Gazoo Racing.

The return of Scion in such an unexpected form shows how automakers are experimenting with historical brands, adapting them to modern trends such as hybridization and off-road mobility. This may also indicate growing competition in the adventure vehicle segment, where environmental friendliness and extreme capabilities are combined.
