Toyota Changes Strategy Due to Rapid Development of the Electric Vehicle Market in Europe

Toyota Increases Electric Vehicle Production in Europe

Toyota is preparing for a large-scale expansion of electric vehicle production at its plant in the Czech Republic. According to new data, the company plans to produce up to 100 thousand electric cars annually starting in 2028. This step is related to preparations for the ban on the sale of new internal combustion engine (ICE) cars in the EU, which will come into force in 2035.

Toyota’s European Strategy

Currently, the share of electric vehicles in the European market is about 16%, while in Toyota’s native Japan, it is only 2%. The company announced plans to introduce 14 electric models for the European market by 2026, including electric versions of the C-HR+ and an updated version of the bZ crossover.

“The decision to localize electric vehicle production in Europe reflects Toyota’s long-term goals in the field of sustainable development and preparation for new European regulations”

Simultaneously, the Japanese automaker is feeling increasing pressure from Chinese competitors, who already hold 5.1% of the European market. Despite this, Toyota adheres to a cautious approach to a full transition to electric power, focusing on hybrid solutions and range-extending technologies, especially for large vehicles.

Although the new plans indicate a change in the company’s approach, experts do not expect a sudden shift in strategy. Toyota will continue to combine different types of powertrains, considering the practical limitations of modern battery technologies. This step can be viewed as part of a broader transformation of the auto industry, where traditional manufacturers are trying to find a balance between new requirements and the real needs of consumers.
