Trump supports Putin’s idea of a tunnel between Russia and Alaska

Russian envoy proposes tunnel between Russia and USA

A Russian representative has put forward the idea of building a 70-mile-long tunnel that would connect Russia and the United States across the Bering Strait. This project is being proposed as a potential task for Elon Musk’s company The Boring Company.

Suspicious timing of the proposal

This proposal emerged on the eve of the meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump. During this meeting, the discussion was supposed to be about supplying Ukraine with Tomahawk cruise missiles, which would allow Ukrainian forces to strike targets deep within Russian territory, including even Moscow.

Technical details of the project

In his address to Elon Musk, Russian representative Kirill Dmitriev noted that The Boring Company’s technologies could significantly reduce the cost of the project:

@elonmusk, imagine connecting the USA and Russia, America and Afro-Eurasia via a Putin-Trump tunnel – a 70-mile link symbolizing unity. Traditional costs amount to 65 billion dollars, but @boringcompany technology could reduce them to less than 8 billion. Let’s build the future together!

American side’s reaction

President Trump did not dismiss this idea outright, but noted that it is “interesting” and that it is “worth considering.” Even more unexpected was Trump’s reaction when he directly, during the meeting with President Zelenskyy, asked the Ukrainian leader about his opinion on this project. Zelenskyy responded that he was “not happy” with such a proposal.

Political context

The emergence of such a proposal precisely at a time when Ukraine is trying to obtain more powerful means to counter Russian aggression looks more than suspicious. It can be assumed that the Russian side is trying to divert attention from real problems and create the appearance of constructive dialogue, while simultaneously continuing to wage war. Such grandiose infrastructure projects are often used as a tool of political influence, especially when they appear at the most inopportune moment for this.
