In Japan, three Toyota 2000 GT sports cars have been put up for sale at once — the most expensive models in the brand’s history. For these rare 1960s coupes, they plan to earn a total of about $3.8 million.
The 1967 Toyota 2000 GT has long held the status of the brand’s most valuable model. It was this coupe that helped the Japanese company announce itself on the world market and achieve a number of racing victories. The model is rare: from 1967 to 1970, only 337 coupes and 2 convertibles were produced. The two convertibles were featured in the James Bond film “You Only Live Twice.” The price for a 2000 GT often exceeds a million dollars, and collectors constantly compete for each example.
Three cars are up for sale: a silver coupe with an automatic transmission for $970,000, as well as a red and a white coupe with manual transmissions, each priced at $1.2 million.
The most expensive versions are equipped with a 2.0-liter inline-six engine producing 150 horsepower, developed by Yamaha specialists. Acceleration to 100 km/h takes 8.4 seconds, and the top speed is 220 km/h. The sports car features independent suspension and disc brakes on all wheels.
The Toyota 2000 GT left a deep mark in automotive history as the first truly Japanese supercar and an example that sports cars from the Land of the Rising Sun can be no less prestigious than legendary European competitors.
