Three Mercedes SUV models bring back stars and radiator grilles into trend

Mercedes tests updated SUV models

Mercedes-Benz is actively working on updating its model range. After presenting new design solutions for the CLA and other models, it’s now the turn of the popular SUVs. Several prototypes with almost no camouflage were spotted at the test track, allowing us to see the main changes.

Among the updates are a larger radiator grille with a separate frame, reminiscent of classic Mercedes models. Also appearing are star-shaped LED headlights, which were first introduced on the E-Class. These changes are meant to emphasize the premium nature of the models and keep them competitive against the new BMW X5 and Audi Q7.

Expectations and competition

The three-row GLS, unlike the GLE, has no direct competitors in the BMW lineup, but it will have to compete with the updated Audi Q7. Both models will receive not only a new design but also updated technology. The launch of the updated versions is expected by the start of the 2027 model year.

The previous facelift for the GLE and GLS took place in 2023, so these new changes can be considered the second stage of modernization. This indicates that Mercedes places great importance on its SUVs, which remain some of the most popular in the world. Given the rapid development of electric models, these updates could be the last for conventional internal combustion engines in these series.
