Turkish Transport Minister publishes video of himself driving at 225 km/h in a zone with a 140 km/h speed limit

Turkish Transport Minister films himself driving at 225 km/h

Turkish Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu published a video on social media in which he exceeds the speed limit while “inspecting” a section of the highway. In the recording posted on platform X, the minister’s car speedometer shows values from 190 to 225 km/h, which significantly exceeds the national limit of 137 km/h (85 mph).

Reaction and Consequences

The video quickly went viral, garnering over 5 million views and numerous comments where users mocked the minister for essentially reporting his own traffic violation. Uraloğlu did not hide the incident and admitted his mistake, publishing an explanation: “I got behind the wheel to inspect the Ankara-Niğde highway and unintentionally exceeded the speed limit for a short period. With this video, I have effectively exposed myself.”

Fine and Event Context

For the violation, the minister received a fine of 9,267 Turkish lira, which is approximately equivalent to 225 US dollars. This situation is not the first time a government official has been involved in a similar story: previous cases have been recorded, such as an Ohio senator participating in a Zoom call while driving, and an Australian mayor getting into an accident after consuming alcohol.

Such incidents show how important it is to adhere to traffic rules, especially for those who hold high positions and should be role models for society. Although the fine may seem insignificant, the public admission of guilt and the public reaction demonstrate that such actions do not go unnoticed and can affect trust in government officials.
