Thousands of Acura SUVs Recalled Due to Software Glitch That Activates Emergency Driving Mode

Problem with Electronic Steering Control in Acura RDX

More than 17 thousand Acura vehicles have been recalled in the USA due to an issue with the electronic power steering system that can cause the system to switch into emergency mode. Although the manufacturer has not reported any injuries or fatalities related to this defect, 84 warranty claims have already been recorded.

Cause of the Malfunction

While developing the software for the electronic power steering system of the 2025 model year to comply with California Idle Stop requirements, the supplier JTEKT North America Corporation accidentally set an incorrect value for the Integrated Dynamics System (IDS).

If the IDS system is in comfort mode, and the lane keeping assist system is active, and the driver turns the steering wheel sharply during a turn, the electronic power steering may detect an error and switch to emergency mode.

Scale of the Problem and Manufacturer’s Actions

The recall affects 17,344 updated 2025 RDX models manufactured from January 23, 2024, to August 18, 2025. Honda began investigating the defect in October of last year and throughout 2025 collaborated with the supplier to determine the root cause.

Dealers were notified of the recall in early October, and owners will receive letters starting October 20. Official Acura dealers are to reprogram the electronic power steering control unit’s memory with updated software, which will eliminate the problem.

This situation highlights the importance of proper software testing in modern vehicles, especially considering the increasing complexity of electronic systems. The manufacturer’s quick response and transparent communication will help avoid more serious consequences for driver safety.
