Unexpected Assistance During a Chase
The work of police officers sometimes takes completely unpredictable turns. Few could have imagined that during the pursuit of a criminal, an officer would use the services of a rideshare driver. This is exactly what happened in one of Florida’s counties when a suspect attempted to flee after a vehicle stop.
Beginning of the Incident
It all started with a routine vehicle check. During a conversation with the passengers, one of the suspects admitted there was marijuana in the car. When the officer prepared for a more thorough search of the vehicle for other illegal substances, the situation escalated sharply.
One of the men got out of the car and ignored repeated demands to leave the backpack. Instead, he tossed the bag to another man who was already standing nearby.
Escape and Unusual Assistance
The second suspect, having received the backpack, immediately took off running. Body camera footage shows that the officer began a foot pursuit, but only after a brief pause to assess the situation and the safety of his partner. By the time he rushed after the criminal, the distance between them was already significant.
It was then that help arrived from a Toyota Sienna driver, who pulled up with the side door open, as if during a robbery. Inside the minivan, a Mario Kart video game could be seen on the back seat.
“Get in!” — the driver shouted, and the officer complied.
On the recording, the minivan can be heard, likely moving at the edge of its capabilities, approaching the location where the suspect had fled.
End of the Pursuit
After a few moments, they caught up with the fugitive. The officer jumped out of the car, ending up in front of the suspect, with a charged Taser. The pursuit ended quickly, and all thanks — to the minivan driver, who acted as an unexpected helper.
Before driving off, the driver checked if the officer was okay. The policeman thanked him, to which he received a simple reply: “Glad I could help.” The local sheriff’s office played on the association with Mario Kart, as that very game was available on the back seat of the Toyota.

This case is a reminder of how important civic awareness and willingness to help can be. Although such scenarios are certainly an exception, they demonstrate that unexpected circumstances often require quick and unconventional thinking. One can only hope that drivers wishing to assist law enforcement always do so, first and foremost, with regard to their own safety and the safety of those around them. The event also highlights how diverse the challenges in police work can be and how ordinary citizens sometimes become part of that work in the most unexpected way.
