In California, nearly 12,000 speeding tickets were issued in one day, and 200 drivers may lose their licenses without trial

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) conducted a massive 24-hour speed enforcement operation that resulted in a record number of tickets. In just one day, officers issued 11,767 speeding tickets, with 200 drivers traveling at speeds over 100 mph (160 km/h).

Operation Details

The special enhanced enforcement period lasted from 6:00 a.m. on April 28 to 5:59 a.m. the following day. Officers patrolled highways across the state, focusing specifically on speed violations. In total, the CHP recorded 23,087 “enforcement actions,” of which 19,564 were issued as official citations.

Consequences for Offenders

Of particular note are the 200 drivers who exceeded speeds of 100 mph (160 km/h). According to a new state law, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has the authority to revoke driving privileges in cases of extreme speeding or reckless driving, and a court order is not necessarily required for this.

Why Focus on Speed?

The CHP emphasizes that high speed reduces reaction time, increases impact force, and complicates braking. Speed enforcement is one of the simplest tasks for police, as it is a clear “yes” or “no” regarding exceeding the limit. This is why the operation did not focus on other violations, such as reckless driving or tailgating.

This large-scale operation demonstrates that California is seriously ramping up its fight against speeding. Given that nearly 12,000 tickets were issued in a single day for speed alone, such crackdowns can be expected to become regular occurrences. The DMV’s new powers to revoke licenses without a court trial make the consequences for offenders even more severe than before. Drivers should remember that even a momentary lapse in speeding can lead not only to a fine but also to the loss of their driving privileges.
