Vandalism Incident During Monterey Car Week

During the Monterey Car Week, two McLaren models were subjected to an act of vandalism, causing concern among supercar owners. The owners discovered the damaged cars with shattered windshields near the Pine Inn around midnight on Friday.

Owner and Police Response

One of the owners, Steve Rohrer, reported that the police informed him of the incident at one o’clock in the morning. He noted that cleaning the interior of glass shards was challenging and expressed concern about potential damage to the dashboard and paint, which could be very expensive to restore.

I went down from my room, opened the rear doors, and indeed—there were three police officers, a lot of light everywhere, and the front part of my windshield was smashed

Suspect Detained

On Tuesday morning, Carmel police detained 30-year-old Samuel Shaffer from Pacific Grove in connection with this incident. Acting Police Chief Treyer indicated that the detention was made possible thanks to the FLOCK camera system, eyewitness testimonies, and cooperation with police from neighboring cities. He also noted that the criminal’s motives are still unclear.

Consequences and Context of the Event

Steve Rohrer expressed hope that this incident would serve as a signal for the criminal to behave more responsibly. Regardless, the incident will leave a permanent mark on his biography. Police also reported that during the week, seven arrests were made related to vandalism, reckless driving, driving under the influence, and possession of illegal weapons, with over 65,000 vehicles being processed daily.

This event serves as a reminder of the importance of security measures during mass events, especially when it comes to expensive cars. The effective work of the police and modern technologies contribute to the rapid solving of crimes, which may serve as a deterrent for future incidents.
