The new BMW M iX3 model has an unexpected feature hidden under the hood

Development of the sports version of the electric crossover

BMW is pleased with the market reaction to the Neue Klasse iX3 model and continues to develop new variations for its latest electric off-roader. Naturally, at least one of them will be focused on the sports segment, receiving engineering and design refinements from the M division.

Prototype testing near the Nürburgring

Our photographers captured the performance off-roader prototype on public roads near the Nürburgring. Compared to previous sightings, the iX3 version with the M badge looks more refined, showcasing many components ready for series production.

Aggressive design and technical improvements

The front bumper features a more aggressive design compared to the optional M Sport package already offered for the iX3, but without excesses. Fresh camouflage stickers on the hood may conceal new ventilation openings, while slightly more substantial side skirts, barely noticeable widened wheel arches, and a new set of five-spoke alloy wheels enhance the sporty appearance.

Finally, the rear is devoid of the optional spoiler showcased at the IAA Mobility exhibition in Munich but features clearer contours on the rear bumper leading to a redesigned diffuser with a central opening.

Improved chassis and braking system

In addition to visual changes, the off-roader will also receive more precise chassis tuning for improved handling. The camouflaged prototype appears to be equipped with a lowered suspension and has larger perforated disc brakes.

Expected specifications and future versions

The sportiest iX3 version will likely receive the M60 designation and may debut next year. It will feature two electric motors with power exceeding the 463 hp of the regular iX3 50 xDrive, potentially reaching over 600 horsepower.

While this M Performance iX3 version may surpass the discontinued X3 M with its bi-turbo V8 engine, BMW could go even further with a more powerful offering. A full-fledged iX3 M may join the lineup later, elevating the off-roader to supercar performance levels by utilizing the four-motor powertrain of the future i3 M sedan.

The development of M electric models demonstrates growing competition in the high-performance off-road vehicle segment, where traditional dynamic performance indicators are combined with environmental benefits. This also indicates that BMW plans to expand its electric lineup without sacrificing the sporting character that has always been their hallmark.
