A rare 1969 Chevrolet Camaro coupe was sold at auction in the USA. The car was purchased for $1,815,000, setting an absolute record for this model. The lot was sold at a Mecum auction. This is reported by “Focus.ua”.
The high price is explained by the fact that this is an extremely rare Yenko COPO version. Only 201 such Camaros were produced, and the sold car was the first in the series – a test prototype created for racing.
Chevrolet Camaro Yenko COPO: Origin and Uniqueness
The project was authored by American dealer Don Yenko, who decided to bypass General Motors’ internal restrictions and build the most powerful Camaro possible for drag racing. That is why the model received a special factory COPO configuration, unavailable in the standard lineup.
The car participated in drag strip races in 1969 and later passed into private collections. Subsequently, the sports car underwent restoration and repeatedly won awards at classic car festivals.
