Uber and Lucid Strike a Deal to Supply Thousands of Driverless Taxis

Uber and Lucid Launch New Robotaxi Service

Uber is preparing to launch a new robotaxi service that will use Lucid Gravity electric vehicles. It is planned that in the coming years, over 20,000 autonomous vehicles will be introduced to the market in various countries around the world. The first launch will take place next year in one of the major US cities.

For Lucid, this is an important step, as the company, despite its high-tech developments, remains less well-known than other electric vehicle manufacturers. Last year, the company delivered only 10,241 cars, so the partnership with Uber could significantly increase its popularity.

Technologies and Investments

The service is being developed in collaboration between Uber, Lucid, and Nuro. The autonomous robotaxis are equipped with sensors and cameras that provide a 360-degree view. The Nuro Driver control system, which corresponds to Level 4 autonomy, is already being tested at a proving ground in Las Vegas.

“Autonomous vehicles have enormous potential to change our cities for the better. We are excited to collaborate with Nuro and Lucid on this program,” said Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi.

Uber is investing $300 million in Lucid, and Nuro will receive investments amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars. The production of the robotaxis will be carried out at Lucid’s facilities, and the software for autonomous driving will be installed after the vehicles are manufactured.

This project could become an important step in the development of autonomous transportation, as it combines Lucid’s technological achievements, Uber’s experience in mobility, and Nuro’s developments in unmanned driving. The success of the initiative could change the taxi market and stimulate further investment in autonomous transport.
