Ukraine is turning into a dump for old diesel cars from Europe

Europe, and Germany in particular, are actively getting rid of diesel cars. The trend is that the more developed a country is, the less its residents are interested in heavy fuel vehicles. This is all related to scandals surrounding diesel cars, namely the manipulation of harmful emissions data.

More and more cities are imposing restrictions on the use of such cars and even raising taxes for their owners. It is not surprising that the latter are trying to get rid of them as quickly and cheaply as possible. And those who are taking full advantage of the diesel buzz are… the Ukrainians.

Indeed, Ukraine became the leader in exporting used diesel cars from Germany, showing a 136-percent increase in the first half of 2018. According to Christian Kille, a professor of applied logistics at the University of Würzburg-Schweinfurt, in less developed European countries, diesel cars from Germany are particularly attractive to motorists mainly because the prices are very good. Therefore, in addition to Ukraine, diesel cars from Germany are being exported to Croatia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, and Romania.

As for the richer and more developed EU countries, there they prefer electric and hybrid vehicles. This applies to Germany, Norway, Switzerland, and Finland, where the demand for diesel cars has already significantly fallen and continues to decline.
