Ford is preparing an affordable electric pickup for $30,000
Ford’s secret electric vehicle development team is testing a new $30,000 pickup truck that is expected to hit the market next year. This midsize vehicle will be the first model on a new platform focused on cost reduction.
Ford announced its ‘Model T Moment’ a year ago, promising an affordable electric pickup and other models on the same platform. According to new reports, prototypes will soon appear on the roads of Dearborn ahead of the official release.
Prototypes are already being tested
According to Ford CFO Sherry House, prototypes of the future midsize electric pickup are already being assembled and tested. The company is rushing to complete work ahead of the planned launch in 2027. Although Ford clarified that camouflaged trucks are not yet driving on Michigan roads, spokesperson Dave Tovar confirmed to The Detroit Free Press that they will appear in public within the next few weeks.
This means drivers in the Detroit area will soon be able to see the vehicle on which Ford pins high hopes for its electric future.
New platform and ‘Skunkworks’ team
This pickup is important not just as a new model. It is the first product of Ford’s ‘secret’ skunkworks team at the Electric Vehicle Development Center in Long Beach, California. More importantly, it will be the debut model for the new Ford Universal Electric Vehicle platform.
Ford CEO Jim Farley first introduced this architecture in 2025, promising a family of affordable EVs with a radically different cost structure. The first vehicle is expected to be a four-door midsize pickup priced at approximately $30,000.
Manufacturing innovations
House told investors that the project is on schedule. ‘We are on track for launch in 2027,’ she said, noting that Ford is already vetting suppliers, testing prototypes, and evaluating new manufacturing technologies, including megacasting.
‘We are on track for launch in 2027.’
This process, popularized by Tesla, can significantly reduce manufacturing complexity and costs. Ford believes this savings will be key to profitability for the new pickup at a relatively low price.
‘It will be very feature-rich. It will be very tech-centric. It will be affordable.’
Strategic importance for Ford
Ford’s EV business has struggled to generate profit, making the success of this new architecture especially critical. Judging by House’s comments, Ford is betting that this vehicle and platform will change the game. We will get our first real look at this strategy when heavily camouflaged prototypes begin appearing on public roads.
Ford’s new $30,000 pickup is not just another model but an attempt by the company to fundamentally change its approach to EV manufacturing. The use of megacasting and a universal platform aims to reduce costs to a level that allows competition not only with other EVs but also with traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. If Ford succeeds in bringing a technologically rich and affordable pickup to market, it could pose a serious challenge to competitors, especially Tesla Cybertruck and Rivian R1T, which are positioned in a significantly higher price segment. At the same time, the question remains whether the company can provide sufficient range and performance at this price to satisfy both regular drivers and commercial customers.
