Governments are tired of expensive military trucks – Ford has a cheaper alternative

Ford offers its commercial pickups to the world’s armies as an alternative to expensive military vehicles

Ford’s F-series pickups are known for outselling Chevrolet competitors for years. However, these vehicles may now find themselves on an entirely different battlefield — a real military one.

The automaker reports that governments in North America and Europe have approached the company with a proposal to use Ford commercial vehicles for modern defense operations. The reasons for this interest are quite clear.

Military procurement is typically extremely slow, costs enormous sums of money, and produces vehicles that often look ready for the apocalypse but have issues with finding spare parts. Ford believes there is a smarter alternative that is already on dealer lots.

According to the company, governments are increasingly interested in adapting existing commercial vehicles because they are cheaper, faster to deploy, and already designed to operate in extreme conditions. Ford claims that the same pickups used by contractors, utilities, and construction workers can handle military transport and support tasks just as well.

Super Duty in service

This means models like the Ranger, F-Series, and Super Duty lineup are suddenly attracting attention far beyond construction sites and ranches. Ford particularly highlighted the Pro Power Onboard feature, which turns a pickup into a mobile generator, extremely valuable during military operations and disaster relief.

The Ranger appears especially significant in this context, as it is already sold worldwide and designed for international markets. Ford notes that its global presence could make this mid-size pickup an attractive option for governments looking to standardize fleets across different regions.

Already proven by security and law enforcement services

Some military and law enforcement agencies already use Ford products. The company noted that Rangers are currently used for military transport in certain markets, and Explorer-based Police Interceptor models are widely used by law enforcement.

In revealing these discussions with defense officials, Ford took the opportunity to remind of its historical achievements in this field. During World War II, the company produced military trucks, engines, and aircraft for the Allied forces. More recently, Ford repurposed production facilities to manufacture ventilators and protective equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ford says this is all still in the early stages, and no contracts have been signed yet. But if in the near future you see footage from a battlefield that somehow resembles a construction hypermarket parking lot, don’t be surprised.

This approach reflects a general trend toward optimizing military spending, where preference is given to ready-made commercial solutions instead of developing unique equipment from scratch. Using mass platforms like the Ranger and F-Series allows for a significant reduction in both procurement and subsequent maintenance costs, since spare parts and service infrastructure already exist in the civilian sector. Additionally, it paves the way for faster integration of the latest technologies initially developed for the commercial market, such as hybrid powertrains or autonomous driving systems, which can be adapted for military needs.
