Recall of Supercharger Kits for Ford Mustang
Ford has announced a recall of 1,048 supercharger kits intended for installation on 2024–2025 Mustang models. The issue lies in an updated control module that may fail, leading to the shutdown of key safety systems. The most dangerous scenario is the uncontrolled acceleration of the vehicle, which in this configuration develops up to 810 horsepower.
Problems with Acceleration Control
The Mustang is already known for its tendency towards unpredictable situations on the road, but now an official update from the manufacturer has further increased the risks. It’s not just about the power of over 800 horsepower, but also about a potential malfunction that could lead to an unplanned increase in engine RPM.
The recall concerns kits sold through Ford Performance and Roush Performance. As reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, they may improperly limit unwanted acceleration.
Source of the Malfunction
The problem arose not due to the mechanical part of the Whipple supercharger, but because of a modified engine control unit. This module, which is responsible for the operation of the car’s systems, contains software that mistakenly disables electronic safety functions.
Owners of 2024–2025 Mustang S650 models with installed kits may notice a check engine light or a key symbol on the instrument panel. However, in the worst-case scenario, they will face an uncontrollable engine with 810 horsepower.
Is the Risk of Uncontrolled Acceleration Real?
Such a course of events is unlikely and can only occur if the throttle actuator fails, leading to it sticking. Typically, safety systems compare the driver’s acceleration intent with the vehicle’s actual performance and intervene in case of discrepancies.
However, the updated control module on vehicles with the supercharger disables this protective function, so it is necessary to fix the malfunction before serious consequences occur. Currently, Ford has not reported any accidents or injuries related to this issue.
Problem Resolution
The fix involves reflashing the engine control module, which can be performed at an official Ford dealership. The Ford Performance kit for the Mustang GT and Dark Horse includes a 3.0-liter Whipple supercharger, a dual-pass intercooler, a 92mm throttle body, GT500 fuel injectors, and special spark plugs.
The cost of the kit is $10,500, and it comes with a 3-year warranty when installed by a dealer or certified specialist. In addition to power, the kit provides 615 lb-ft of torque, which once again reminds us why the Mustang has always been a symbol of emotion and drive.
This situation highlights the importance of proper testing of product updates, especially when they concern critical safety systems. Although no incidents have been recorded so far, the prompt recall helps avoid potential risks for drivers and other road users. Ford is demonstrating a responsible approach by offering a free solution to the problem through its dealer network.
