In Illinois, over 5 thousand fines were issued in one day – and that’s not all

Large-scale speed control operation in Illinois

During the special operation “Speed Awareness Day” in Illinois, 5,189 fines for traffic violations were issued. This amounts to over 215 fines per hour throughout the entire day of July 23. In addition to fines, the police issued 4,140 warnings, of which 1,688 were for speeding.

Overall, law enforcement officers spent 4,517 hours on the state’s roads. Out of 248 arrests, 52 were criminal, including 6 for driving under the influence of alcohol and 4 for drug use. Additionally, 6 firearms were seized, a missing person with suicidal intentions was found, and a suspect in a theft was detained.

Expansion of the initiative

The campaign, which has been held since 2016, has expanded significantly. In 2022, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin joined Illinois, and the following year – Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska.

“Speed Awareness Day is not just about control, but also about saving lives through education, visibility, and interaction with the community,” said Kenny Winslow, Executive Director of ILACP.

This event has become an annual test of discipline for drivers and an additional source of income for the state budget. Given the scale of the operation, local residents should mark this date on their calendars to avoid unpleasant encounters with law enforcement.

Statistics show that despite stricter control, many drivers continue to ignore speed limits. This confirms the need for constant work on driving culture, especially in regions with high accident rates. The initiative also demonstrates the effectiveness of interstate coordination in matters of road traffic safety.
