by The results of a large-scale study of the used car market have been published. Experts have identified which cars most often have tampered mileage.
The study was conducted in 18 countries in Europe and America – Bulgaria, Hungary, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, USA, Ukraine, France, Czech Republic, Croatia, and Estonia. A total of 700 thousand used cars were examined.
It turned out that the mileage is most often tampered with in BMW – five models of the brand are in the TOP-10 rating, including the top two leaders. In first place is the BMW M5 (33.6% of cars with tampered odometers), and in second place is the BMW 7 Series (33.4%).

- BMW M5 (2006, 2012, and 2013) – 33.6% of cars with tampered mileage
- BMW 7 Series (2009, 2010, and 2016) – 33.4%
- Subaru Outback (2011-2013) – 31.8%
- BMW 6 Series (2012, 2013, and 2015) – 31.7%
- Audi A8 (2011, 2012, and 2014) – 31.4%
- Volkswagen Phaeton (2008, 2011, and 2012) – 31%
- BMW X5 (2007, 2008, and 2014) – 26.7%
- BMW 5 Series (2007, 2010, and 2011) – 26%
- Ford Mustang (2014-2016) – 25.9%
- Audi A7 Sportback (2011, 2012, and 2015) – 25.8%
- BMW X6 (2010, 2011, and 2015) – 24.4%
- BMW M4 (2014-2016) – 24.4%
- Volkswagen Touareg (2011-2013) – 23.3%
- Volvo V70 (2007-2009) – 22.6%
- BMW 3 Series (2006-2008) – 22.3%
- Porsche Panamera (2012-2014) – 22.3%
- Audi A6 (2006, 2012, and 2013) – 22.2%
- Chrysler Town&Country (2008, 2014, and 2015) – 21.4%
- Volkswagen CC (2012-2014) – 21.2%
- Volkswagen Sharan (2011-2013) – 19.6%
It was also determined that mileage tampering mainly occurs on cars from 2006-2016. In diesel cars, the odometer is tampered with more often – obviously because their mileage is higher.
