Today, April 5, a strict lockdown took effect in Kyiv. Public transport can now only be used with special passes, resulting in taxi prices skyrocketing.
Judging by the photos actively posted on social media, the cost of transportation has increased by 2-3 times, and in some places – even by 5-8 times (the price of taxi rides can change at any moment – it all depends on demand and the number of working cars on the roads).
For example, a trip approximately 7-10 km long cost on average 350-500 UAH as of 10:30 AM, with prices sometimes soaring to 700, 1000, and even 1300 UAH, whereas during ‘pre-lockdown’ times it was 120-180 UAH. However, to be fair, by lunchtime the cost of travel had decreased on average to 150-200 UAH.
Moreover, the increased cost of travel did not guarantee a fast delivery, as simultaneously the capital became gridlocked with traffic jams.
Conclusion? Most likely, this trend will remain during peak hours until the end of the lockdown. For more or less acceptable prices and without traffic jams, one can travel only at ‘non-liquid’ times – roughly from 11:30 AM to 4:00 PM.
