Rain and Thunderstorms Persist in Ukraine

June 2021, with its temperature records, is behind us. Another heatwave is promised in July, but for now, at the beginning of the second summer month, the air temperature remains moderate.

Rains are forecasted every day from Friday to Monday, but they will vary in location and intensity. There might be a situation like this: one half of Kropyvnytskyi might get wet on Saturday, while the other half remains dry. July is the month of thunderstorms, traditionally called the ‘thunderer.’ July 3 – is Methodius Day. If it rained this day, people would say: “It will rain off and on for another forty days.”

Thunderstorms will “roam” across Ukraine from Friday to Monday, moving from place to place: Friday in the west; Saturday along the northern border, in the center, and east; Sunday – in some western, central, eastern regions; Monday- in the center, south, and east of the country.

July is the month when the swimming season in all water bodies has already opened. The water temperature has risen to high values: Dniester near Zalishchyky +23 °C, Vorskla near Poltava +25 °C, Danube near Reni +28 °C, Siverskyi Donets near Lysychansk +25 °C, Dnipro near Kyiv +25 °C, Tisza near Chop +22 °C, Desna near Chernihiv +26 °C.

Western regions of Ukraine expect cloudy and rainy weather on Friday, according to Sinoptik.ua forecasts, with temperatures ranging from +23…+25 °C, with light to moderate winds. Saturday, July 3, will see more rain, with daytime temperatures at +20 °C, and nighttime temperatures at +17 °C. It will warm up to +26 °C by Monday.

In the highlands of the Carpathians it’s cool, with weekend temperatures at +14…+16 °C, cloudy with clearings, and rain expected.

In Transcarpathia, on July 2-4, the air temperature will not rise above +25 °C, with rain showers. Monday will be sunny, warming up to +28 °C.

In the east of the country, the weekend will offer a comfortable temperature for relaxing at +29…+31 °C, but thunderstorms and heavy showers could spoil the mood. On Monday, it will be cooler at +26…+28 °C, as thunderstorms won’t leave the region alone.

In southern regions of Ukraine, temperatures on Friday and Saturday will reach up to +29 °C, while on Sunday and Monday, they will drop to +22…+23 °C, with temperatures reaching +26 °C in the Kherson region. Thunderstorms and downpours are expected during the weekend. In the Kherson region, Monday will be cloudy with possible heavy rain showers in some areas.

Central Ukraine: on Friday the “coolest” region will be Vinnytsia, with temperatures up to +24 °C, while other regions will see +28…+31 °C. From Saturday until Monday, temperatures will drop to +24…+25 °C. Rain and thunderstorms will occur in some areas.

In Dnipro it will be hot on Friday and over the weekend with temperatures at +30…+31 °C, with occasional light rain possible. Thunderstorms will hit on Monday, with daytime rain and a temperature of +26 °C.

In the north of Ukraine from July 2-5, daytime temperatures will be +23…26 °C, and nighttime temperatures +17…+18 °C. Thunderstorms and rain will occur in some areas, with possible heavy showers on Monday, July 5.

In Kyiv from July 2-5, air temperatures will range from +26…+27 °C. Monday will be cloudy and rainy. Atmospheric pressure is 741 mmHg.
