Why Police Radars are Returning in Ukraine

A series of high-profile traffic accidents have prompted the authorities to further tighten road control. While the tragedy in Kharkiv led to tougher fines for traffic violations in Ukraine, speed control is now making a comeback on Ukrainian roads.

No, the automatic violation recording system is not ready yet, and the legislation needs to be changed for it. But speed violations still need to be addressed. The Minister of Infrastructure, Volodymyr Omelyan, stated that inspectors from the National Police will return to the roads with portable devices for measuring vehicle speed, or simply put, radars.

Police officers in all regions will receive completely new radars of foreign production. According to Oleksiy Biloshytsky, the First Deputy Head of the Patrol Police Department, the radars will undergo calibration and a state standard will be developed for them.

In addition, the National Police conducted a large-scale inspection of carriers. During the two-day raid, 1230 minibuses and buses were checked, and 326 violations were identified.
