Model Update and Price Changes
The new 2026 Toyota Highlander model will go on sale in November with a starting price of $45,270. This represents a $5,000 increase compared to previous versions, making it $4,000 more expensive than the Grand Highlander model. Toyota has discontinued the base LE trim and made all-wheel drive standard for all modifications.
Reasons and Consequences of Changes
Toyota Highlander sales fell by almost 50% this year, so the changes for 2026 were not unexpected. However, they may cause concern among consumers, as the choice has been reduced and the starting price has increased significantly.
The main news for gasoline versions was the cancellation of the LE trim, which previously cost $40,320. The hybrid lineup has also been optimized: the XLE Nightshade and Limited 25th Edition have been discontinued.
Comparison with Grand Highlander
The Highlander is now available exclusively with all-wheel drive, which, together with the discontinuation of the base model, raised the starting price to $45,270. This makes it thousands of dollars more expensive than the Grand Highlander, which starts at $41,360, and the all-wheel-drive version costs $42,960. Even the Grand Highlander XLE AWD is only $460 more expensive than the Highlander XLE AWD, which may indicate Toyota’s intention to redirect buyers to the larger model.
Engines and Technical Specifications
For 2026, two familiar powertrains remain. The first is a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine producing 265 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Fuel economy is 21 mpg in the city, 28 on the highway, and 24 combined.
The second option is the Highlander Hybrid with a 2.5-liter engine, an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (eCVT), a nickel-metal hydride battery, and a rear electric motor. Total system output is 243 hp, and fuel economy reaches 35 mpg in all modes.

Price increases and reduced choice may affect the Highlander’s competitiveness, especially against the more affordable Grand Highlander. Buyers will likely have to evaluate whether the updates and standard all-wheel drive justify such a significant price increase.
