Your Region May Restrict Access to the Most Powerful Dodge Durango Versions

V8 Engines for All 2026 Durango Models

Dodge is betting on the V8 for the 2026 Durango model lineup. The base GT version is equipped with a 5.7-liter HEMI engine producing 360 hp. However, in states that adhere to the California Air Resources Board (CARB) standards, the more powerful versions, such as the R/T 392 and SRT Hellcat, will be unavailable.

Starting with orders placed on August 13, every Durango will come standard with a HEMI V8 engine. This is another step by Dodge towards the accessible performance that our customers need and deserve.

Restrictions Due to Environmental Regulations

The Durango R/T 392 and Hellcat are classified as products only for states that do not follow CARB rules. Their 6.4-liter and 6.2-liter engines do not meet emission requirements. Stellantis could have solved this problem with additional certifications or modifications, but for now, it is considered too costly or complex.

Dodge has announced that the R/T 392 and SRT Hellcat versions are only available in non-CARB states, and the company continues to evaluate the possibility of offering the full V8 model range to all customers. Meanwhile, buyers in CARB states can either settle for the 5.7-liter engine or try to purchase a vehicle in another state, but registration will depend on local laws.

Alternatives for Buyers

For residents of CARB states, options remain: choose the base version, try to buy out-of-state, or wait until Dodge adapts the more powerful engines to their requirements. Registration success will depend on specific state rules.

This situation highlights the complexity of the US auto market, where federal and regional regulations often conflict with each other. For Dodge, this is also a challenge, as the company tries to balance the power popular among enthusiasts with environmental requirements that are becoming increasingly stringent. Perhaps future technological solutions will allow these two goals to be combined.
