When you’re driving with a child in the car, the last thing you want to encounter is an intoxicated driver. This is exactly what happened to Carly Atkinson, who, instead of panicking or waiting for help, took control of the situation.
On March 25 in South Australia, Atkinson was driving with her daughter when she noticed a truck dangerously veering into the oncoming lane. Other cars were forced onto the shoulder to avoid a collision. Most people would simply call the police, but this woman decided to act.
A camera recorded the vehicle moving erratically on the road. Atkinson immediately notified law enforcement but, realizing the threat, decided not to wait.
After following the truck for several kilometers, she saw it stop near Chain of Ponds. When the driver attempted to turn right, the woman got out of her car and approached the cabin.
She asked the man if everything was alright. He replied that he was “a bit lost,” after which Atkinson asked him to turn off the engine. After taking the keys, she explained the danger of his actions and took his logbook until the police arrived.
Upon inspection, the 34-year-old driver showed signs of intoxication from methamphetamine and marijuana. It is strictly forbidden to be behind the wheel of a large truck in such a condition.
A police representative confirmed that the offender was issued a 24-hour driving ban and had his license suspended for three months. The case was referred to court.
According to local regulations, heavy goods vehicles are prohibited on the section of road where the incident occurred. Thanks to Atkinson’s decisive actions, a tragedy was prevented. We hope this driver will never get behind the wheel under the influence of drugs again.
