Sometimes one bad decision leads to another, which can quickly result in serious consequences. This weekend we received a vivid confirmation of such a scenario from a dashcam.
The driver of a Toyota Yaris, whose car was equipped with a non-standard hood and spoiler, decided to race on a public road. His attempt quickly turned into serious trouble, the scale of which likely exceeded all expectations.
Location and Circumstances
The video was recorded on Mercury Blvd in the city of Hampton, Virginia. This is not a speedway, but a multi-lane highway with traffic lights, intersections, and normal traffic flow. This is precisely what makes it, perhaps, the worst place for any racing.
The event occurred around two o’clock in the afternoon, when traffic was quite heavy. According to reports, the Yaris’s opponent was a motorcycle.
Unfolding of Events
The owner of the dashcam was moving in the second lane out of four. The Yaris approached from behind in the third lane at a significantly higher speed. As the recording driver noted: “I was driving at a speed of 65-70 km/h when they flew past me, so their speed was likely 95 km/h or more.”
While overtaking the car with the camera, the Yaris driver abruptly changed lanes into the second lane, where he instantly lost control of the steering.
Instant Outcome
The rear of the Yaris sharply jerked to the left, the driver tried to correct the trajectory, but the car skidded to the right, after which it collided with a GMC Yukon traveling in the third lane. The consequences for the Toyota were impressive: a shattered rear window, a torn-off bumper, a damaged trunk, and a detached massive spoiler.
After the collision, the Yaris driver did not stop but attempted to flee by turning onto a side street. However, almost instantly, a police car appeared in the rearview mirror, following him on the same route. As it turned out, the street was a dead end.
Consequences and Arrest
According to the video author’s report, the driver was detained and taken to the police station within a few hours. He may face charges of fleeing from the police, as, according to data, the officer had already activated the emergency lights before the Yaris turned off the highway. The greatest concern is the fact that, at the time of the accident, there were reportedly two adults and two children in the car.
Participating in races is dangerous even on special tracks. Arranging one in city traffic, behind the wheel of a Toyota Yaris, with children in the cabin and a police officer nearby – this is not a display of confidence, but a classic example of poor judgment. The only thing that brings joy in this situation is the absence of injured people. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the car itself.
