Infiniti car owner spends $8,000 on oil change and receives $5,000 repair offer

  • The Infiniti car owner reported that he turned to the service for an oil change and received a shocking price offer.
  • This motorist received a $5,000 bill for repairing his Q50 sedan, which costs about $8,000.
  • Even $1,400 for replacing the battery terminal raises questions about pricing in the service.

It seems the service center tried to surprise by offering an estimate of $1,479.58 for replacing the battery terminal. At first glance, this may seem like a reasonable price for a piece of metal. Perhaps they hoped the client would just agree. However, the fact that they presented such an amazing price offer to the car owner, whose car is worth about $8,000, can be said to be a bit excessive.

Let’s consider a specific 2015 Infiniti vehicle. This may seem strange, since the mark “a” is something that Infiniti didn’t stay with, and refers to the base version of the Q50 of those times. This means that we are talking about a car without extra features. Nevertheless, the estimate in this case seems valid.

Additionally:

The logic of several moments seems questionable. For example, the checks shared by the owner in a Reddit thread show that the service is asking for $459.99 for a differential leak inspection, estimates $902.21 for replacing a radiator hose, and another $125.98 for replacing the cabin filter. However, none of them can compare to the $1,479.58 for a battery terminal. Maybe it’s just an error, but a very strange one.

Even assuming that the service indeed intended to charge this money just for a new terminal, let’s think about its cost. For some cars, a battery terminal can be a very expensive component because it contains computer chips that measure voltage and other data going to/from the battery. However, Q50 does not belong to this category of cars.

So, it seems that the price for the terminal for the Q50 does not differ from the general standard. According to several online stores, replacing a standard terminal would cost less than $10. Maybe the problem is in availability. This could explain the large calculation. Maybe.

Additionally:

But even at a skill rate of $200 per hour, replacing the terminal would require about seven hours of work. However, it doesn’t take much time at all. In fact, it is located right under the hood on the right side under a nice protective cap.

Fortunately, the Infiniti owner didn’t stay with the service’s money-grabbing proposal. “I will probably find a mechanic who will fix it for a more affordable price,” he says in his message. Wise move.
