Problems with the New Electric Dodge Charger Daytona

Dodge had high hopes for the fully electric Charger Daytona, expecting it to usher in a new era for muscle cars. However, the reality turned out to be much less electrifying. Public reception was at best lukewarm, and over time it became increasingly problematic as early malfunctions began to appear.

Not only has Dodge already discontinued the base R/T models, but more and more drivers are expressing concerns about serious flaws in the car. One owner describes the new Charger Daytona as a car that “drives and performs phenomenally,” but only when it’s functioning. And it seems not to be working properly most of the time. Among the most alarming issues is unstable charging operation.

Charging System Malfunctions

A driver who posted on Reddit recounts that he has never been able to reliably charge the car at public stations. Sessions often stop, forcing him to disconnect and reconnect every 5-10 percent of charge, which is obviously irritating. At one charging station, he said he had to trick the app into thinking his Charger was a Cadillac Lyriq just to start a session. He also mentioned that the home charging unit included with the purchase still hasn’t arrived.

Seat and Brake Problems

There is also an issue with the rear seat, as we previously reported. When you slide the front seat forward to allow a rear-seat passenger to exit, the front seat slowly slides forward before automatically sliding back, potentially pinching the person trying to get out from the back.

The last straw was a malfunction they experienced with the brakes. When the car stopped at a store, the brake pedal was firmly pressed to the floor, but the car attempted to lurch forward several times. After a few minutes, numerous warning lights lit up on the dashboard, the traction control system turned off by itself, and the Daytona eventually shut down completely. It remained in this state for several minutes before it could be restarted.

Manufacturer’s Response and Next Steps

Stellantis, according to the report, hasn’t been very helpful. The company denied a buyback request but agreed to cover the rental while the Charger is being repaired. Unfortunately, the assistance is limited to $60 per day, while the cheapest available rental costs $80. “I’ve run out of options, and I just want to warn anyone considering purchasing or leasing this car,” they added. “Unfortunately, I chose the purchase path because I drive many miles per year.”

Given the scale of these issues, their best option now might be to seek legal assistance under lemon laws to force a buyback. This situation highlights the importance of thorough testing of new electric models, especially as they transition to mass production.
