Problem with the Lane Assist System in the Vinfast VF 8
Vinfast has not achieved the success in America it had hoped for, and a new recall affecting every VF 8 sold in the US will not improve the situation. Regulators have identified a concerning safety issue: the driver assistance system in the electric SUV can unexpectedly take over steering control. As a result of a lengthy investigation, Vinfast will have to fix 6,314 vehicles.
Problem Details and Response
The problem is centered on the Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) function in the VF 8. On wide or gentle curves, the function can apply steering corrections so strong that drivers find it difficult to override them. Vinfast acknowledges that the flaw arises from the torque ratio settings in their ADAS system, leading to unstable steering dynamics. Although we haven’t heard of any accidents related to this issue, US regulators have heard enough to initiate a recall.
From Complaints to Recall
In September 2024, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) launched an investigation after receiving 14 complaints about the LKA in the VF 8. These reports alleged that the system poorly recognizes lanes, steers incorrectly, and is hard to correct. The ODI warned that the problem may require “significant effort to control” from drivers and increases the risk of a crash.
Descriptions of Dangerous Situations from Owners
Some drivers described truly frightening moments. One reported that the VF 8 jerked the steering wheel so hard on a curve that it nearly hit a concrete wall, claiming this had happened about 30 times since purchase. Another reported that the LKA constantly pulled back to the center, could not be turned off, which made them afraid to drive the car at all.
Resolving the Issue
To address the issue, Vinfast will launch a free software update that will reduce steering vibration. The company says this will make it easier to override input signals and slow down the transition from automation back to the driver. Notices will be sent to owners on October 24, and the recall itself will begin three days earlier.
This situation highlights the importance of the reliability of driver assistance systems, especially in the context of the growing popularity of electric vehicles. While technology is advancing rapidly, safety remains a critical aspect, and such incidents can affect consumer trust in new brands on the market. It may also stimulate more thorough testing before releasing updates in the future.
