Owners of these Stellantis SUVs are recommended to apply the parking brake in case of primary brake system failure

New recall phase for hybrid models

The Stellantis conglomerate is again in the spotlight due to a new wave of recalls affecting several of its hybrid and sports models on the US market. Among the involved vehicles are the Alfa Romeo Tonale, its related Dodge Hornet with a hybrid powertrain, and the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio.

While all recalls are important, one of them raises particular concern due to the potential severity of the consequences: the brake pedal assembly in the Tonale and Hornet PHEV may fracture during braking. This defect at a critical moment could lead to catastrophic outcomes.

Although Stellantis did not provide details on the mechanism of the possible brake pedal failure, the company confirmed that it is a part of its own production.

The problem was first identified in October 2023, leading to a previous recall of over 21,000 vehicles. This latest action builds on those initial findings, narrowing the scope of the potential safety issue.

Scale of the problem and planned fixes

The new recall covers 5,974 vehicles across the United States. This includes 2,688 Alfa Romeo Tonale PHEVs manufactured from February 23, 2023, to February 14, 2024, and 3,286 Dodge Hornet PHEVs assembled between February 10, 2023, and December 21, 2023.

To date, one accident is officially linked to the brake pedal defect, fortunately with no reports of injuries. Stellantis is instructing dealers to reinforce the brake pedal lever using a bolted connection—a relatively simple solution. Owners will receive notification letters starting January 13, 2026.

Until the repair is performed, as during the first recall, drivers are recommended to use the electronic parking brake in case of primary pedal failure. According to the recall notice, the EPB button, located on the lower center console, can be lifted and held while driving to slow the vehicle to a controlled stop.

Stellantis also notes that the automatic emergency braking system, if still active, will automatically intervene in the event of an imminent collision, even if the pedal fractures.

Headlight issues in the sports model

The second announced recall concerns the 2024 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio model. It was found that vehicles manufactured from February 2, 2024, to December 3, 2024, totaling 313 units, have headlights that may malfunction due to an issue with the wiring routing.

In this case, dealers are instructed to inspect the fender liner and replace it if necessary, as well as check the wiring harness and reroute and/or repair it. Owners will be notified of the recall from January 28, 2026.

These dual recalls from Stellantis highlight the ongoing challenges faced by automakers in controlling the quality of complex modern vehicles, especially those combining new hybrid technologies with high performance characteristics. The recommendation to use the parking brake as a backup stopping method may seem unusual to many drivers, indicating a need for clear communication and training from the manufacturer. Successfully and promptly resolving these issues will be crucial for maintaining customer trust in the conglomerate’s brands in the competitive American market.
